BIOGRAPHY
Alexandra Reed Lajoux

Ph.D., M.B.A.

Alexandra (Alex) Reed Lajoux is a multifaceted author, thought leader, and community advocate whose work spans Arts, Business, and Communities. As founding principal of Capital Expert Services, LLC (CapEx) and Chief Knowledge Officer Emeritus at the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), she brings over 35 years of experience in corporate governance and M&A.

A Story of Fated Encounters and Destined Detours

Alexandra’s story sounds like the plot of a fantastic fictional novel. She had an ideal childhood with a father who worked hard to provide opportunities to dream, a mother who was a children’s librarian, and a grandmother who loved books. At family get-togethers, they would read or recite poetry, nurturing a deep love for literature and knowledge.

Growing up with an inclination towards performing arts, Alex majored in music and drama in college. But a socially and politically radical movement in the 1960s challenged her beliefs, leading her to switch to literature while at Bennington. She earned admission to Princeton University for her PhD, and spent a year in France studying medieval manuscripts on a French government fellowship.

The shadow of economic reality loomed, and realizing there were few jobs for PhDs in humanities, Alexandra pivoted to business. Meanwhile, she had sent an audition tape to La Scala Opera in Milan and was accepted. But then she encountered the most fascinating twist of her life—she met Bernard. They’ve been together for nearly half a century.

At age 28, she enrolled in Loyola College for an Executive MBA program—alongside her father, who had missed college during the Depression. They were in the same class and received their MBAs on the same day. This began her remarkable career in M&A and corporate governance, starting as a $12,000/year newsletter editor and eventually becoming Chief Knowledge Officer with a 35-year career.

If not now, when? I tend to go ahead and do things right away because I have confidence in my intuition.

— Alexandra Reed Lajoux, quoting Hillel

PHILOSOPHY

What Matters Most

Honesty—tempered with kindness, discretion, and tact. Alexandra is an open book with no harboring secrets. She appreciates candor above all.

Hard work—watching her parents wake up early and work to provide a good life instilled a love of meaningful labor. Sometimes she works too much, but work and family go hand-in-hand.

Family—her strongest value. The Clifton Strengths Test identified her as “The Believer – someone who gives her all to causes and serves her family.”

On leadership– “I’m an enlightened follower who checks leadership. I pride myself on selecting leaders with great values to follow, but I retain my voice.”

Beyond the Written Word

Alexandra continues her romance with singing, dancing, and theatre. Every year, she and her grandson participate in “Scrooge the Musical.” She’s also part of the Senior Theatre Project, performing for senior citizen communities and the general public.

She teaches as a catechist on Sundays, driven by a desire to teach children what love truly means. And she aspires to publish her own romance novel—a nostalgic Catholic romance set in the 1980s titled “Rockie: The Triumph of True Love.”
